Insurance requirement, verbatim intent: Private medical (travel) insurance is an explicit statutory requirement, set out on the ISA program page and outline PDF, in ISA Q&A A10, on the MOFA visa page and in the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago requirements PDF. The policy must cover death, injury and illness incurred during the stay in Japan. Cover for medical treatment of injury or illness must be at least JPY 10,000,000 (about EUR 53,999 at the ECB rate of 185.19 JPY/EUR, 2026-06-10); death cover must include repatriation of remains or a death benefit, with no minimum amount stipulated. The insurance period must correspond to the entire planned stay in Japan. Credit-card-attached insurance is accepted if documentation proves the required coverage. An accompanying spouse or child may rely on family coverage under the nomad's policy, with proof of the coverage scope; every applicant, including each family member, must evidence cover. Public health insurance is not an accepted option: per ISA Q&A A10, digital nomads are not mid/long-term residents, receive no residence card and cannot enroll in Japan's public medical insurance. Proof documents are the insurance enrollment certificate plus the policy terms and conditions, together with ISA's 'Explanation of Coverage under Private Medical Insurance' form.
Tax notes: Per ISA Q&A A7, remuneration for remote work performed while in Japan can be exempt from Japanese income tax if the conditions of the applicable tax convention are met - most commonly, presence in Japan of 183 days or less in the tax year or in any 12-month period (the exact rule varies by treaty). Because the visa is limited to nationals of countries and regions that are party to a tax convention with Japan, and the stay is capped at 6 months, exemption is the typical outcome. It is not automatic, however: it fails if the treaty conditions are unmet - for example, if total days in Japan exceed 183 once other visits within the counting window are included, or if salary is paid by a Japan-resident employer (which is in any case prohibited under this status). Working under contract with Japanese companies or individuals is not permitted (ISA Q&A A1/A2), so Japan-source employment income should not arise. Individual outcomes depend on the specific treaty and your personal circumstances; professional tax advice is recommended.

View plansWho the Digital Nomad status is for
Japan’s digital nomad route, open since March 31, 2024, is technically a “Designated Activities” status of residence (Notification No. 53) rather than a classic visa category. It targets remote workers earning at least JPY 10,000,000 a year — roughly EUR 54,000 — from employers or clients outside Japan, who hold the nationality of one of the 51 countries and regions that are both visa-exempt for short visits and party to a tax convention with Japan. Employees and freelancers both qualify; self-employed income is assessed on profit after expenses, and you can combine multiple stable income sources.
Be equally clear about what this status is not. You get one six-month block: no extension, no renewal, and no more than six months under the status within a year. Reapplying requires six consecutive months outside Japan first. No residence card is issued, there is no path to permanent residence or citizenship, and any employment or contractor agreement with a Japanese organization or individual is prohibited. If you want Japanese clients or a long-term base, this is the wrong status.
A spouse and children can accompany you under the parallel No. 54 status with no additional income threshold, provided each is a supported dependent, holds qualifying private medical insurance, and is a national of a visa-exempt country or region.
How to apply, step by step
- Check the ISA’s eligible-countries chart. Only nationals of the 51 qualifying countries and regions can apply for the digital nomad status itself; the spouse/child list under No. 54 is longer.
- Decide whether to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from a Regional Immigration Services Bureau. It is optional, but with one the Chicago consulate quotes five business days of processing; without one your file is referred to Japan with no published timeframe. An agent in Japan cannot file the COE on your behalf.
- Assemble your evidence: proof of at least JPY 10,000,000 in annual income at the time of application, plus the insurance documents described below. The official ISA and MOFA pages define the complete document list.
- Apply at a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad and pay the standard single-entry fee of roughly JPY 3,000 (about EUR 16) in local currency. Many nationalities are fee-exempt at US consulates, and nothing is charged if the application is refused.
- Wait for the decision, then travel within three months — the visa is single-entry and valid for three months from issue. If you need to leave Japan mid-stay, arrange a re-entry permit; children born in Japan during the stay apply in-country to acquire the status.
Taxes
This status pairs unusually well with treaty relief, but the mechanics matter. Per the immigration authority’s own Q&A, pay for remote work performed while you are physically in Japan can be exempt from Japanese income tax where the applicable tax convention’s conditions are met — most commonly spending 183 days or fewer in Japan in the tax year or any 12-month period, depending on the treaty. Because eligibility is limited to nationals of treaty countries and the stay is capped at six months, exemption is the typical result.
It is not automatic. The day count generally includes other visits to Japan within the treaty’s counting window, so an earlier trip in the same year can tip you over 183 days, and exemption fails if a Japan-resident employer pays your salary — something this status prohibits anyway. This is a high-stakes area where outcomes depend on personal circumstances and the specific treaty, so professional advice is recommended before relying on an exemption.
Health insurance
Insurance is an explicit requirement, not a formality. You must hold private medical insurance — travel or international health cover — whose policy period matches your entire planned stay, covering death, injury, and illness incurred in Japan. Medical-treatment cover must be at least JPY 10,000,000 (about EUR 54,000); death cover must include repatriation of remains or a death benefit, with no minimum amount stipulated. Public coverage is off the table: digital nomads receive no residence card and cannot enroll in Japan’s statutory health insurance.
Every applicant, including each family member, must evidence cover; a spouse or child may rely on family coverage under your policy if the documents prove its scope, and credit-card-attached insurance is accepted with adequate documentation. Expect to submit an insurance enrollment certificate, the policy terms, and the ISA’s coverage-explanation form. Frequently asked questions
How much do you need to earn for Japan's digital nomad visa?
At least JPY 10,000,000 in annual income at the time of application — roughly EUR 54,000, or about JPY 833,333 per month. The legal threshold is annual; freelance income is assessed on profit after expenses, and multiple stable income sources can be combined.
How long can I stay in Japan, and can I renew?
Six months in a single block, with no extension or renewal — total stay under this status cannot exceed six months within a year. You can apply again only after spending six consecutive months outside Japan.
Can I bring my spouse and children?
Yes, under Designated Activities No. 54, with no additional income requirement. Each family member must be a supported dependent, hold qualifying private medical insurance (their own policy or family coverage under yours), and be a national of a visa-exempt country or region.
Will I pay Japanese income tax as a digital nomad?
Usually not: remuneration for remote work performed in Japan can be exempt under the applicable tax convention, most commonly where you spend 183 days or fewer in Japan in the relevant period. The exemption is not automatic — other visits to Japan can push you over the day count — so check your treaty's conditions and consider professional advice for your specific situation.
Is health insurance required for Japan's digital nomad visa?
Yes. You need private medical insurance for the entire planned stay covering death, injury, and illness, with at least JPY 10,000,000 (about EUR 54,000) in medical-treatment cover; death cover must include repatriation of remains or a death benefit. You cannot enroll in Japan's public health insurance on this status.
Can I work for Japanese companies or clients?
No. The status only allows remote work for employers and clients outside Japan; any employment or contractor agreement with a Japanese organization or individual is prohibited.
Does Japan's digital nomad visa lead to permanent residence or citizenship?
No. Holders are not mid- or long-term residents, receive no residence card, and the status offers no path to permanent residence or citizenship.
