Taxes on the Namibia DNV

Tax is the part of a move people underestimate most. Here's how Namibia treats a DNV holder's income — when you become a tax resident, what happens to foreign earnings, and the official basis for each. It's information, not tax advice.

How it works

Namibia uses source-based (territorial) taxation: income is taxed by reference to where it is sourced, regardless of the earner's nationality. Foreign-sourced income (remote work for overseas employers/clients) is generally outside the Namibian tax net. CAVEAT (tax practitioner, tier-3): under a strict reading, income for services physically rendered while the holder is in Namibia can be deemed Namibian-sourced and therefore taxable, subject to relief under a Double Tax Agreement (Namibia has DTAs with Botswana, France, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Sweden and the UK). This point is contested and not settled in published guidance; NIPDB publishes no specific DNV tax exemption. No fixed day-count residency trigger is specified for DNV holders. Not tax advice - individual position should be confirmed with a Namibian tax adviser.

When you become a tax resident

Namibia doesn't pin tax residency to a single day-count for this route — it turns on your overall ties (a home, your family, your centre of economic life). Treat any "183-day" rule of thumb with caution here and confirm your position with the tax authority.

If you stay tax-resident somewhere else too, a double-taxation treaty between Namibia and that country usually decides which one taxes a given slice of income — another reason to get personal advice before you move money or change residency.

Namibia tax & the DNV: FAQ

When do I become a tax resident in Namibia?

Namibia does not key tax residency to a single day-count for this route; residency turns on your overall ties and circumstances. See the notes above and confirm with the tax authority.

Is my foreign income taxed in Namibia?

Namibia taxes on a territorial basis — broadly, only Namibia-source income is taxed, so foreign remote income is typically outside the net. Check any remittance rules.

Does the DNV come with a tax break?

Not a special one — you're taxed under Namibia's ordinary rules once resident. A double-tax treaty between Namibia and your home country may still affect where specific income is taxed.
