Tax is the part of a move people underestimate most. Here's how United Arab Emirates treats a VWP holder's income — when you become a tax resident, what happens to foreign earnings, and the official basis for each. It's information, not tax advice.
The tax position
- Treatment
- No personal income tax
- Tax-residency trigger
- Not a fixed day-count
- Income threshold
- €3,033/mo
How it works
The UAE levies no personal income tax, and the official u.ae portal promotes the programme as offering zero income tax for individuals (per an archived copy of the page, last updated 30 December 2024; the live federal page could not be confirmed). UAE corporate tax, in force since 2023, does not apply to employment income. The 183-day and 90-day tax-residency tests under Cabinet Decision 85/2022 are relevant only for obtaining a UAE tax residency certificate; because those thresholds could not be confirmed on a current official page, no residency-day trigger is shown here. Visa holders may remain tax-liable in their home country, and the visa itself confers no tax-treaty protection.
When you become a tax resident
United Arab Emirates doesn't pin tax residency to a single day-count for this route — it turns on your overall ties (a home, your family, your centre of economic life). Treat any "183-day" rule of thumb with caution here and confirm your position with the tax authority.
If you stay tax-resident somewhere else too, a double-taxation treaty between United Arab Emirates and that country usually decides which one taxes a given slice of income — another reason to get personal advice before you move money or change residency.
